About me

http://www.kelseylivingstonart.com/

My work has always been heavily influenced by my surroundings, and my perceptual reactions to my environment.  I focus on the time and place of my being. Since moving to Louisiana I have taken notice of the wild untamed nature of it all. Spending time outside, in this very unique climate, is informing my practice.
Currently I consider myself to be foraging, figuratively and literally, for elements and objects that speak to the world I occupy. I am interested in memory and perception as human experience, and how my memory of my surroundings informs me of my existence. The ephemeral nature of life, and memory are at the core of my study at this time. In being out with nature, I have come to know that the experience of it all can hardly be summed up with painted or printed analogs, so I want to dig deeper into the phenomena of the occurrence.
I utilize many animal forms in the work, all of which come from life, because the idea of humanity is readily conveyed through their gesture and gaze. I look at them, because they also look at us. I am interested in the moments of encounter, when they know they’re being looked at. Some of the more political aspects of my work stem from my noticing human impact on this environment, and the fragility of the systems therein. What I am noticing though is not a sweeping collection of suffering life, but an astonishing ability for adaptation.
A few influences I am looking at now are: Ernst Haekel’s book: Art Froms in Nature. David Rothenberg’s novel, Survival of the Beautiful. Ceramic sculptor Beth Cavener Sticher, for her Apologia series shown in 2008, and probably most importantly artist Jenny Kendler for her entire body of sculpture, writing, activism and painting to date.
My goal through this period of research is to come out the other end with a body of work that will fulfill my need to confirm my existence through projections of experience, and bring attention to some of the awesome natural forms that people look over every day; to provide a moment of pause and to share THIS moment.
